In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.

The plural of the abbreviation SEO can also refer to “search engine optimizers,” those who provide SEO services.

Here is some Web Terminology a beginner looking for a good website designer might find helpfull.

Accessibility

The practice of designing a product or a website to make it available to as many people as possible, regardless of their physical abilities. On the web, this can include using subtitles on video or employing text markup protocols that ensure the content will work with assistive devices (for example, to read the text out loud).

CSS3

Cascading Style Sheets are sets of instructions for web browsers. They define the presentation and consistency of documents — for example, the layout and the fonts — and they’re often separate from the web-page content. By using style sheets, the same content can display in different ways on a mobile device, a desktop computer, or a PDF. CSS3 is the newest implementation of that markup language and enables responsive markup.

Device detection

When a device accesses a website, it sends descriptive information to the server. A site host can use this information to detect a mobile device and tailor the content for it through style sheets, scripts, and other methodologies. Some detection can also be done client-side.

HTML5

The fifth revision of HyperText Markup Language, the core language for presenting content on the web. HTML5 includes new syntax such as tags for video that is responsive and will also play in many browsers without requiring end users to install proprietary plug-ins.

Media query

In CSS, web developers can define a media typesuch as screen or print, and specify the look of the content by specifying conditions such as width, height, or orientation. A media query combines a media type and a condition to specify how web content will appear on a particular receiving device.

Native app

A software application developed specifically to run on the architecture of a mobile device, and which is downloaded, purchased, and upgraded through a central distribution portal (such as the App Store).

One web

The idea that a website should be designed to work on multiple devices through CSS styles and HTML, without redesigning the site or changing the content for different devices.

Optimized content

Although the term “optimization” is often used for improving the visibility of a website in online search engines (also known as SEO), it sometimes refers to web content that’s designed to function well on multiple computers and mobile devices.

QR code

Stands for “Quick Response” code. It’s a barcode—read by devices such as camera phones— that enables someone to display certain information or open a web page. At this time, Android phones include native support for QR codes but iOS devices require a third-party app.

Responsive web design

A website that responds to the device that accesses it and delivers the appropriate output for it uses responsive design. Rather than designing multiple sites for different-sized devices, this approach designs one site but specifies how it should appear on varied devices.

Web app

Uses web browser technology on the Internet to display a mobile URL on a device, often with a different appearance than the corresponding desktop website.

Search Engine Optimization

This, often called SEO, is the work a good website designer does to bring your website into the first 10 natural results of a search engine query.

Responsive web design – A website that responds to the device that accesses it and delivers the appropriate output for it uses responsive design. Rather than designing multiple sites for different-sized devices, this approach designs one site but specifies how it should appear on varied devices.

Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).

Mashable called 2013 the Year of Responsive Web Design.

Elements of Responsive Web Design

A site designed with RWD uses CSS3 media queries, an extension of the @media rule, to adapt the layout to the viewing environment—along with fluid proportion-based grids and flexible images:

Media queries allow the page to use different CSS style rules based on characteristics of the device the site is being displayed on, most commonly the width of the browser.

The fluid grid concept calls for page element sizing to be in relative units like percentages or ems, rather than absolute units like pixels or points.
Flexible images are also sized in relative units (up to 100%), so as to prevent them from displaying outside their containing element.

Related concepts to Responsive Web Design

Mobile first, unobtrusive JavaScript, and progressive enhancement
“Mobile first” and “unobtrusive JavaScript”/”progressive enhancement” (strategies for when a new site design is being considered) are related concepts that predated RWD: browsers of basic mobile phones do not understand JavaScript or media queries, so the recommended practice is to create a basic web site then enhance it for smart phones and PCs—rather than try “graceful degradation” to make a complex, image-heavy site work on the most basic mobile phones.

Progressive enhancement based on browser-, device-, or feature-detection
Where a web site must support basic mobile devices that lack JavaScript, browser (“user agent”) detection (also called “browser sniffing”), and mobile device detection[15][18] are two ways of deducing if certain HTML and CSS features are supported (as a basis for progressive enhancement)—however, these methods are not completely reliable.

For more capable mobile phones and PCs, JavaScript frameworks like Modernizr, jQuery, and jQuery Mobile that can directly test browser support for HTML/CSS features (or identify the device or user agent) are popular. Polyfills can be used to add support for features—e.g. to support media queries (required for RWD), and enhance HTML5 support, on Internet Explorer. Feature detection also might not be completely reliable with older browsers: some may report that a feature is available, when it is either missing or so poorly implemented that it is effectively nonfunctional.

Challenges, and other approaches to Responsive Web Design

Luke Wroblewski has summarized some of the RWD and mobile design challenges, and created a catalog of multi-device layout patterns. He suggests that, compared with a simple RWD approach, device experience or RESS (responsive web design with server side components) approaches can provide a user experience that is better optimized for mobile devices. Server-side “dynamic CSS” implementation of stylesheet languages like Sass can be part of such an approach.

One problem for RWD is that banner advertisements and videos are not fluid.
However search advertising and (banner) display advertising support specific device platform targeting and different advertisement size formats for desktop, smartphone, and basic mobile devices. Different landing page URLs can be used for different platforms,[28] or AJAX can be used to display different ad variants on a page.

There are now many ways of validating and testing RWD designs,[30] ranging from mobile site validators and mobile emulators to simultaneous testing tools like Adobe Edge Inspect. The Firefox browser and the Chrome console offer responsive design viewport resizing tools, as do third parties.

History of Responsive Web Design

Ethan Marcotte coined the term responsive web design (RWD) in a May 2010 article in A List Apart. He described the theory and practice of responsive web design in his brief 2011 book titled Responsive Web Design. Responsive design was listed as #2 in Top Web Design Trends for 2012 by .net magazine[35] after progressive enhancement at #1. They also listed 20 of Ethan Marcotte’s favorite responsive sites.

Grafycon is a professional web designer company that can also provide you with high quality hosting. But first what is Web Hosts?

A web host provides server space for you to host or house your website. When you contract with a hosting provider, you pay a nominal fee (monthly, yearly, etc.). With that fee comes not only the space for your website to live, but the all important ability to create email accounts.

As long as you continue to host with that particular provider, your website will be live and your emails will continue to be sent and received (assuming your ISP cooperates — don’t confuse your hosting provider with your ISP). ISP means Internet Service Provider, such as ATT.

But what if you want to change hosts? What are the steps?

Changing a Web Hosting Provider

Let’s first just put the 10 steps in bullet format so you can gain an overall understanding of what’s entailed when you want to switch hosts. This article assumes your email is hosted with the provider and that you do NOT have in-house mail servers.

1. Select a new hosting provider that will give you a dedicated IP address.
2. Transfer your existing site via FTP to your new server space.
3. Create duplicate email accounts on the new server space.
4. Set-up these duplicate accounts in email client.
5. Change the TTL (Time to Live) with your current host to 300.
6. Change the Domain Name Servers to your new host.
7. Wait for propagation.
8. Cancel old hosting account.
9. Remove old email accounts.
10. Celebrate!

Now let’s review these 10 steps in greater detail. Keep in mind, many of these steps can be performed for you by your webmaster or in-house IT professional

1. Select a new hosting provider that will give you a dedicated IP address.
While many hosts offer shared IP addresses, we prefer and recommend having a dedicated IP address. If you have an ecommerce type site, it’s a must. There are other advantages, but for the purpose of this article, the main one is that a lot of leg work can be done using the IP address (upload existing site, testing, create email accounts, etc.).

2. Transfer your existing site via FTP to your new server space.
As noted above, using the IP address you (or your developer) can transfer your current site to this new space and make sure everything looks and works as intended. Some scripts and email will not work until the DNS is pointed to the new host. This is the time to test your new site (to the extent possible) so that when it transfers to the new host, it will be ready to go!

3. Create duplicate email addresses on the NEW server space.
Whatever accounts you have currently set-up on your current host can be duplicated on the new host. Again, these emails won’t work until the DNS has fully propagated but the benefit of doing this is that no emails will be lost (hopefully!) during the propagation process.

4. Set-up these duplicate accounts in email client.
You’ll need to create duplicate email accounts in your preferred email client, following the guidelines provided by the new host. Initially, users will get error messages when trying to access the new mail server, but as soon as the propagation is complete, these messages will cease. Note, this step is ONLY necessary if your email settings are different on the new hosting provider’s servers.

5. Change the TTL (Time to Live) with your current host to 300.
24-48 hours before you wish to move your site from your old host to your new, in the zone record settings (in your current hosting panel) change the TTL to 300 (5 minutes). Again, this should be done 24-48 hours before you initiate the DNS transfer. Once your site is transferred, you or your developer MAY need to set the TTL back to its normal value.

6. Change the Domain Name Servers to your new host.
After you’ve waited 24-48 hours for the TTL to kick in, you can initiate the DNS change. This requires your logging into your registrar where you secured your domain and changing the name servers from the old names to the new (ask your new provider for these names if you don’t know what they are — typically something like NS1.HE.NET; NS2.HE.NET; NS3.HE.NET.)
Note, if you’re changing to a different DNS provider (changing which servers are authoritative), then you MUST make sure to recreate any custom DNS records (A, MX, etc.) as well as create any custom zone entries on the new host’s name servers.

7. Wait for propagation.
Actually, there’s not much waiting involved, as long as you’ve set the TTL to 300 24-48 hours in advance. In just 5 short minutes your site will be live on the new hosting server.

8. Cancel old hosting account.
No sense paying for TWO hosting accounts now…be sure you cancel your old host account or you will continue to be charged, even if your site isn’t with them anymore. BUT WAIT! Before you do, ensure you’ve retrieved all your data from this account, including email, hosted files, etc. Some hosts will charge you a fee to provide you a backup of your old site if you request this AFTER you’ve cancelled your account.

9. Remove old email accounts.
If you have set-up a non-duplicate email account in your email client, as soon as the site has transferred to the new host (again just 5 minutes once you initiate the DNS transfer), you can delete this account (else you will start getting error messages). Otherwise, assuming your email settings for the respective hosts were identical, there’s nothing further for you to do.

10. Congratulations!
I knew you could do it! Give yourself a pat on the back.

You do not need to buy web traffic to your website. You could buy web traffic from plenty of questionable businesses promising that they’ll offer you thousands of visitors straight to your website. Do not believe them. There is only one way to get traffic to your website, a professional website designer who is able to correctly add content and that comes from hard work.Having a professional website designer that ranks you high in natural search in Google is a goldmine. However someone has to get down in that hole and pick away and bring out every little piece of gold. It is hard, hard work to bring a website high in Google and keeping it there requires weekly attention. You also need to have professional hosting to boost your website in Google. Call us, we have done the research and provide you with professional hosting to complement your website design.

You are going to get emails, telling you to let their company submit you to the search engines. You do not need this if your website design is done correctly. Others will offer to place you in Google Adwords so that you come up in Google Ads. You can pay for this but it will cost you a minimum of $200 dollars a week to get high enough to bring in results. You could pay for a professional website design with the cost of 15 weeks of Google Ads.

After we have established the general structure of the website design and the objectives behind its creation (type of content, number of pages, etc.), we will have to create a detailed budget estimate, which will include the costs and the estimated time of completion for the project at hand.

We calculate our pricing on estimated hours that will be given to your project. ($30 USD per hour.) Our base price is $3,000 dollars as most projects take at least 12 full days to finish. Our base price is firm, even though we may spend more hours on your project. We will not raise the price once set. If we need to charge more we will give you a firm price based on hours worked in all areas we will mention below.

Web development is not an easy task, as someone who is misinformed might think. Rather, it is a complex endeavor that requires the collaboration of various professionals, each of whom is assigned a specific role in the development of the project.

Here are some of the positions GRAFYCON provides for your website design and development.

Project manager: is in charge of managing the project by coordinating the work team, coming up with a budget for the project and establishing the types of resources, costs and delivery time.

Development team: depending on the complexity of the project, it can include the following positions:

Web concept designer: is responsible for giving shape to the project, starting from the initial idea, the communication strategies and the business objectives.

Web designer: is responsible for the layout of the entire website. He or she is in charge of curing the look, the user interface, colors and the main navigation tree.

Graphic designer: working with the web designer and/or the client, the graphic designer is in charge of the page layout and the overall graphics of the website. The graphic

The website designer’s main responsibility is to convey a range of emotions to the user through his or her choice of images and graphics.

web developer: is in charge of structuring the various web pages. He or she is responsible for the correct transfer of a web designer’s ideas into a page that can be viewed online.

This is done using a series of codes, as well as by using XHTML, CSS, ASP, PHP, JSP, SQL for script development and to encode the dynamic part of the website.

Contents team: in charge of writing. Using the notes collected from the client, the contents team is to come up with a language that pertains to the web project, is specific to the needs of your client and that can also help embellish the site.

Marketing team: is responsible for advertising the website, making sure that there are enough visitors and that the website reaches its intended goals. The marketing team is involved in the project from the very beginning, working alongside the web and graphic designers, and the web developer.

Web Marketing Strategist: is in charge of the communication and web services that are part of the project. Mostly, it involves: coming up with a business idea, product/service placement, technological aspects, and partnership creation. It also involves a continuous monitoring of the various services offered by the web site.

These specific positions are tied to the complexity and overall budget of a given project. So, a small project that has a limited budget could have one person cover more than one of these positions. A large project could have many people involved. No matter how large or small the project, GRAFYCON can accomplish all your website design needs.
